Britons opt for jumpers over high energy bills

Brits are turning to their woolly jumpers rather than their central heating as energy bills soar, new research has found.

More than half (56 per cent) of the Britons surveyed by moneysupermarket.com said that they were postponing putting the heating on or didn't want to put it on as they were worried about higher energy costs.

Almost two-thirds (61 per cent) said they would rather pile on the clothing and snuggle up in their jumpers to keep warm at home than use the heating.

Head of utilities at moneysupermarket.com Paul Schofield said it was clear that people were worried about their energy bills, especially as prices had been put up so frequently this year.

The price comparison service advises consumers to change to cheaper energy suppliers in order to save money on high heating costs, as well as considering measures such as installing loft insulation or cavity wall insulation, which can save up to 35 per cent of heat loss through walls.

With high energy bills eating into many people's savings, some people may choose to take out a personal loan to fund improvement costs such as installing loft insulation.
